Working on puppets, I had taken liberties with the anatomy of the figure. I felt the need to rectify that. This study led me towards painting nudes. Dehaspanda, the resonance of the body. Our emotions can only be expressed through our body, and nudes are like linear confessions of the body and soul.

In the meanwhile, I was drawn towards the poetry of Grace, a renowned Marathi poet. His poetry evoked in me a visual resonance which assumes the form of line and image. The saint poet Kabir's analogy that the body is just the external fabric that matters little before the soul, struck a chord in me and this poetry of Grace and Kabir started appearing in my paintings, the calligraphy taking a very pictorial form.

While studying the nude, I happened to see photos of Marilyn Monroe. She has an operative crescent shaped scar on her abdomen. The crescent moon, which is a recurring symbol that you can see on my nudes are the wounds on one's mind that can be seen only as scars on the body. I was not painting unblemished beautiful woman! I think a woman looks beautiful with her scars.
